CM Auditions

"The contemporary company has been one of the best experiences I have had! It has provided me with countless opportunities and connections. The company has helped me improve my vocal abilities in this genre. It has also helped me enjoy the art of contemporary music and I have grown as a performer because of it. Utah COPA has helped me do things I never thought possible!” - Britney Pay, Student

Contemporary Co. Preparation
Vocal auditions do not require an appointment. Please plan to attend the entire time for dance auditions.

Vocal audition preparation
– Prepare the best 30-45 seconds of a song that fits what you are auditioning from classic or current pop/rock/indie songs.
– LOVE the song you sing. If you don’t love it, don’t sing it.
– Have a second contrasting song just in case (ie. one upbeat and bright and one slower and sweet…sing your favorite one first).
– Bring a karaoke track on an mp3 player. You can also sing a cappella but that is not encouraged. Accompanying yourself via guitar is also allowed.
– Dress to impress; nicer than regular school clothes

Dance audition preparation
Dress in comfortable, form fitting clothes and shoes that are easy to move in. Tennis shoes are recommended. Be prepared to stay after you sing, change your clothes, and warm up. Choreography will be taught on Monday, April 15th from 4:00-6:30.

This year the contemporary company will travel to Nashville to do a studio session in the same place that Taylor Swift records, work with American Idol alumni and produce one of several music videos throughout the year.

The program is geared toward students who are interested in pursuitng scholastic, community and commercial opportunities that range from solo vocal artist, on stage dance and vocal productions, songwriting, media tech and scholarship opportunities at the university level in Media Music programs.

The goal of the contemporary performing companies is train its performers to become recording artists, members of touring performing companies, and perform in local and major TV and film productions. Some of our students have already performed on American Idol and The Voice, on stage with David Archuleta and Kevin Olusola, and serve the community as educators, choreographers, and coaches in the performing arts.

Students participate in regular private and public performance opportunities that build confidence, performance skills, build resumes and plant seeds with important industry producers. There are four contemporary performing companies organized by age and experience.

Each student receives appropriate training, and instruction that challenges and expands ability in an environment that inspires. In order to accomplish these goals student placement is conducted through an audition process.
